The ALA Constitution states the purpose of ALA as, “The object of the American Library Association shall be to promote library service and librarianship.” The stated mission is, “To provide leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.”

The Division of Digital Teaching and Learning supports the Mission and Goals of the State Board of Education by providing support services and technology and instructional resources to public schools of North Carolina. These services and resources include Canvas, Learning Management System; Home Base, suite of digital classroom management tools and instructional resources; IMPACT, the guidelines for North Carolina's Media and Technology Programs; and NC WiseOwl (NC Online Windows for Learning), a collection of online subscription resources for use in research projects and homework assignments.
